Discovery Chests
Each Discovery Chest contains artifacts of everyday life, such as clothing, musical instruments, cooking utensils, games, toys, religious symbols, and literature from other cultures. These items can be handled and examined by the students, thus providing a visual and tactile context for cultural learning.
Each Discovery chest also includes:
- Teacher's Guide providing lesson plans and follow-up activities;
- A catalogue of object descriptions with the name and purpose of items;
- Supplemental articles from outside publications;
- Traditional folktales from the designated culture;
- A generous list of internet resources to further enhance lesson plans.
Discovery Chests provide:
- Hands-on learning;
- Enrichment to the curriculum in keeping with the NY State Learning Standards;
- Opportunities for students to compare cultures and recognize commonalities with their own culture.
